The road to divorce is sometimes paved with weird intentions

Just as weddings can be grand affairs, so can divorces be as messy as train wrecks. When these are highly publicized, we can’t seem to look away. Sometimes, however, people have the strangest reasons for breaking up their marriages — and our curiosity about them gets the better of us the same way train wrecks do. Here are a few examples for your reading pleasure.

In the 2016 presidential election, she voted blue. He voted orange.

In many holiday gatherings, heated political debates are considered par for the course. Sometimes, politics even causes families to break apart. Case in point: A California woman named Gayle McCormick divorced her husband of 22 years because she learned that he voted for Donald Trump.

“I felt like I had been fooling myself,” McCormick said. "I realized how far I had gone in my life to accept things I would have never accepted when I was younger."

She deceived him — with her makeup

In Algeria, a man divorced his wife just days after their nuptials because she happened to wash her face. That is, before then, all he ever saw was a beautiful woman in makeup, but once she removed the facade, he woke up to the sight of a total stranger. In fact, he thought that a thief broke into their house!

It’s a toss-up between the man being shallow or the woman being fraudulent — or perhaps they’re both to blame for not spending enough face time with each other.

His love gave her love handles

Imagine being told “I love you” by your husband at least twice a week, then actually experience him walk the talk by cooking you multiple-course meals. That apparently was too much affection from one T.P. Lucas because that’s the reason his wife Rashida divorced his nice behind. According to her:

"The man can cook. Brother can throw down. But I mean, he cooked four-course meals for breakfast, lunch, dinner. Two o'clock in the morning, if I was hungry he wouldn't fix me a sandwich — this man would make a whole meatloaf, potatoes, and gravy, vegetables, a big stupid cup of Kool-Aid. I'd go to sleep right on that food and then get up in the morning and he done fixed French toast, pancakes, grits, biscuits, so now I'm laying on food on top of the food I just laid on a couple of hours ago."

Now, it would have been domestic abuse if she had been force-fed, but it looked like she willingly ate it all up…and spat her husband out in the process.

In a game of poker, he poked her the wrong way

Having lost all his money at the poker table, Andrei Karpov did what no husband in his right mind would do: try to win back his money by betting his wife, Tatiana. Regardless of whether he won or lost (he lost), he lost his wife for good.

“It was humiliating and I was utterly ashamed,” claimed Tatiana. “But as soon as my ex-husband did that I knew I had to leave him.” She divorced Karpov, and, in a strange twist of fate, fell in love with and subsequently married Sergey Brodov, the man who “won” him from Andrei. Apparently, love was in the cards, after all.

His blue-ticking ticked her off

Blue-ticking — the act of reading but not responding to someone’s text or online messages — can apparently be grounds for divorce. In Taiwan, a woman has been granted a divorce from her husband because she was able to prove that he blatantly ignored her messages for nearly half a year. In fact, even when she reached out to him when she was hospitalized because of a car accident, all she ever got were “Read” indicators in her Line app. Talk about adding insult to injury.

“The couple’s marriage is beyond repair,” stated the ruling of the family affairs court. Maybe it was for the best, since her husband’s family reportedly treated her badly after she moved in with them. According to her, she was made to pay most of their bills (the man had no stable income) and wasn’t even allowed to fully enjoy the things she was paying for (she told the court she was given a time limit to how long she could take a shower, which she couldn’t take as hot as she wanted to). Perhaps his silence was actually his signal for her to run away?
